The United States has commended Sri Lanka on its progress towards rebuilding the nation. This sentiment was expressed by Thomas A. Shannon Jr., the Under Secretary for Political Affairs at the US Department of State when he met Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena in New York recently. The President, who was in the United States in order to attend the United Nations General Assembly, stated that Sri Lanka’s strategic position in the region has had a positive impact, while also leading the country to face challenges as well. One of the positive aspects has no doubt been the development of the tourism industry; this has been mirrored in the steady increase in tourist arrivals matched by the opening of many new Sri Lanka hotels belonging to well-known local hospitality brands such as Heritance Hotels & Resorts as well as reputed international chains.
