From mountain trails to marine treasures – Sri Lanka maps a sustainable tourism future
At the 10th World Tourism Leader Summit in Colombo, industry specialists urged Sri Lanka to diversify its tourism offerings beyond traditional cultural and beach attractions. Consultant Miguel Cunat highlighted the success of the Pekoe Trail, recognised by TIME magazine, and proposed new themed routes based on cinnamon and red rice. He stressed that trail tourism could bring equitable benefits to rural communities if managed sustainably.
Speakers also discussed developing domestic air links and expanding marine tourism, including whale watching and yachting. Professor Noel Scott noted Sri Lanka’s potential in the blue economy through eco-certification and collaboration among marine operators.
Meanwhile, events linked to the Tourism Expo 2025 underscored Colombo’s role as a tourism hub, with hotels like Mandarina Hotel Colombo showcasing urban leisure highlights such as a Colombo infinity pool, reflecting the country’s blend of innovation and natural charm.
