Whales are the most marvellous giant sea mammals that have survived through ages that are so graceful and elegant to watch the way they swim and dive in the deep seas. Beginning of January every year, the whales and dolphins can be seen parading their presence in the southern and north-western oceans of Sri Lanka. Kalpitiya and Mirissa are two locations that are famous for whales and dolphins that can be seen in large numbers during this time of year. Some of the popular whales that can be seen in large pods of over hundred are sperm whales, blue whales, pigmy sperm whales and pilot whales. Some can be seen in close waters as shallow as 30 meters from the shore if one gets lucky to catch those rare moments to see them.
