Sale of Pasmo and Suica Travel Passes Resumed in Japan – A Boost for Commuters and Tourists
Japan’s popular travel passes, Pasmo and Suica, are back in circulation. After a year-long hiatus due to a chip shortage, these smartcards, widely used for public transportation and cashless payments, resumed sales on 1st September 2024. This marks a significant milestone for both residents and visitors to Japan, as it expands access to convenient and efficient transportation.
Pasmo, managed by private railway companies in the metropolitan area of Tokyo and Suica, issued by JR East, offer seamless travel across various transit systems. To enhance security and improve usage management of these cards, the acquisition process has been updated as well. Passengers are now required to register their personal information at the time of purchase, instead of obtaining anonymous cards. Meanwhile, the “Welcome Suica” pass for tourists which was previously available only at the Haneda and Narita International Airports can now be conveniently purchased at major stations in Tokyo.
For those exploring Japan’s capital, train travel remains a popular choice. The Tokyo Metro, accessible with Suica or Pasmo, connects to popular neighbourhoods including Roppongi which offers sightseeing, entertainment and long stay apartments in Tokyo. Such accommodation options can be enjoyed at properties like Oakwood Residence Roppongi T Cube Tokyo from which travellers can easily access the Roppongi Station to further explore the city.
