Sri Lanka Railways Launches First Calypso Tourist Train from Nanu Oya to Demodara
A new tourist rail experience through the scenic hill country
Sri Lanka Railways has launched its first-ever Calypso tourist train, designed to enhance travel experiences for both local and international tourists. The train made its debut from Nanu Oya to Demodara and will now operate every Tuesday, offering passengers panoramic views of waterfalls, tea plantations, and misty hills.
Tourist-friendly features include specially designed coaches, an open-roof carriage, and a dedicated dining area—perfect for capturing the scenic beauty of the hill country in comfort. Tickets are priced at Rs. 10,000 per traveller. After reaching Demodara, the journey continues to Bandarawela and then returns via Badulla.

As Sri Lanka expands its tourism offerings, the new rail experience adds to the diverse travel opportunities across the island. After exploring the hill country by train, travellers often continue their journeys to the southern coast. Destinations such as Hikka Tranz by Cinnamon, a well-known Hikkaduwa resort, offer a contrasting seaside setting to complement the inland adventure. Plans are also underway to introduce another Calypso train to accommodate increasing interest.
