Four-Lane Motorway from Devata to Galle Aims to Boost Tourism and Ease Traffic Woes

Paving the way for progress—Galle’s gateway set for a major transformation.

A major infrastructure upgrade is on the horizon as Sri Lanka’s Road Development Authority (RDA) proposes a four-lane motorway from Devata to the iconic Galle cricket stadium. The move targets easing congestion and improving access to the heritage city, long hampered by unauthorised obstructions along the Southern Expressway entrance.

RDA Galle Chief Engineer Krishanika Bandula confirmed that the Rs. 900 million project includes road widening, culvert construction, traffic signals, and removal of illegal structures.

Local businesses and tourism ventures—particularly those offering stays like Heenatigala Walawwa and many other Galle Villasexpect improved access to increase footfall and enhance guest experiences.

Stakeholders highlight that the current road conditions delay visits to attractions like the Galle Fort and limit access to the bay, affecting water sports and pedestrian safety.

Tourism leaders and civic groups are calling for swift implementation to revive Galle’s full potential as a top travel and business destination.
