A unique ‘floating city’ is to be constructed in the Maldives and will minimise the effect of rising sea levels due to climate change; this was reported on the EcoWatch website on 30th May 2021. It also highlighted the fact that such developments are key to a country like the Maldives which features low-lying coral atolls that come under threat if sea levels continue to rise.
Dutch Docklands based in the Netherlands is designing this floating city in a lagoon that’s a 10-minute boat ride from Male, the nation’s capital. The floating segments of the city will be connected to barrier islands that form a protective outer ring, while new reefs will be grown to provide additional water breakers. Such sustainable measures can also be seen at eco-resorts like Baros Maldives which have coral transplantation programmes; guests looking for enriching things to do in Maldives can join such initiatives and actively take part in coral conservation.
