African Parks Initiates Massive Rhino Rewilding Project from Controversial Breeding Program

African Parks, renowned for managing national parks across Africa, has made a groundbreaking move by acquiring Platinum Rhino, John Hume’s controversial intensive rhino breeding initiative. The conservation organisation’s ambitious plan involves rewilding all 2,000 southern white rhinos from Hume’s project, adhering to a framework curated by independent experts.

However, the task ahead presents a significant challenge. Finding secure habitats to annually translocate 300 rhinos remains a hurdle, compounded by the persistent threat of poaching for their valuable horns.

Peter Fearnhead, CEO and co-founder of African Parks, acknowledges the enormity of the undertaking. He states, “The scale is enormous and daunting, yet it presents one of the most thrilling and globally strategic conservation opportunities—a continent-wide endeavor of unparalleled magnitude for any species.”

This monumental effort signifies a pivotal step in conservation, showcasing an unwavering commitment to safeguarding the southern white rhino population while tackling challenges on a colossal scale.
