An Increase in Chinese Tourists as Travel Ban on Sri Lanka Lifts – Positive Signs Ahead

The travel ban imposed on Sri Lanka by China was relaxed over the last week of May and there has been a significant boost of tourists arriving afterwards. The Minister for Tourism Development, John Amaratunga declared that this was an uplifting message to the industry as other countries will be encouraged to reconsider their travel bans as well. Many have already followed suit including Switzerland, India, Germany and Sweden.

Last year, China was the second largest market when it came to tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka, accounting for 12.7% with a total of 260,000 arrivals. While bookings in Colombo may have slowed down, tourists are also looking further inland or down south with luxury hotels in Galle being a popular choice. The Fortress Resort & Spa is amongst such properties that have many offers and packages on now, targeting both local and foreign travellers.
