Ayurveda: A Vital Link Between Sri Lanka and India

The Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, the cultural arm of the Indian High Commission, celebrated the Ninth Ayurveda Day in Colombo last November. Santosh Jha, the High Commissioner initiated the event at the New Arts Theatre of Colombo University alongside Vice Chancellor Prof. H.D. Karunaratne. Ayurveda Day saw an attendance of about 300 people including students, scholars and practitioners.

Highlighting the event, High Commissioner Jha emphasized Ayurveda as a bridge connecting India and Sri Lanka through shared heritage and holistic healing traditions such as those used in Ayurvedic beauty products in Sri Lanka. Originating in India thousands of years ago, Ayurveda blended with Sri Lanka’s indigenous knowledge to form a unique but interconnected tradition. Both nations value Ayurveda’s emphasis on balance, natural remedies, and personalised health care. This is evident in initiatives taken by brands like Spa Ceylon Sri Lanka.
