Last month saw the successful completion of the Beach & Underwater Cleanup initiative in Polhena, Matara along Sri Lanka’s famed south coast. This annual event organised by the Polhena Diving Centre took place on 16th March 2019 along the Polhena- Madiha coastal area. Polhena is in fact, home to one of the country’s most well-known shallow water beaches and has a house reef as well. It makes for an ideal excursion from the best hotels in Galle including the likes of Le Grand Galle by Asia Leisure.
During the Beach & Underwater Cleanup, volunteers helped in clearing garbage including metal cans, polythene and plastics which were sorted accordingly so they could be recycled. Meanwhile, divers also got involved and cleared local dive sites of foreign objects, fishing nets and other material that would cause harm to the marine ecosystem; these items were brought to shore and disposed of in a proper manner.
