Vesak is a very significant festival celebrated by the Buddhists in Sri Lanka during May every year. Although this is mainly a Buddhist celebration, non-Buddhists also, sometimes, join the celebrations by lighting colourful lanterns and by various other means. Buddhists generally visit temples and observe Sil on this day and the evenings are generally reserved for vibrant celebrations with lamps, lights, pandols, and lanterns.
Many hotels in Sri Lanka including the Sigiriya hotels conduct ‘Bakthi Geetha’ sessions in which people sing Buddhist devotional songs together to entertain the crowds. This is an attractive event to most of the tourist travellers who spend their Sri Lankan holidays in resorts such as Aliya Resort because, for most of them, this becomes their very first experience exploring the Buddhist culture and its traditions.
