Cambodia Sees Tourist Arrivals Fall in 2020 – Domestic Tourism A Key Solution

The tourism industry in Cambodia was hard hit due to the global COVID-19 pandemic and recorded only 1.31 million tourist arrivals in 2020, a decrease of 80% compared to 2019. However, there was some positive news regarding domestic tourism which picked up and according to figures, only registered a 20% drop compared to the previous year.

Domestic tourism continues to be a key factor in 2021 too; as reported on the Khmer Times website on 10th March this year, hotels are continuing to focus on attracting locals with various special offers, some with discounts of up to 60%. Also highlighted was the recently launched #AngkorLikeNeverBefore social media campaign to uplift tourism in Siem Reap; it’s home to the famed Angkor Archaeological Park near Anantara Angkor Resort. Through this campaign, locals were shown the beauty of the site’s ancient temples which can easily be visited by those staying at a budget or boutique hotel Siem Reap has to offer.
