Honouring tradition, embracing joy – Deepavali in Sri Lanka

Deepavali, the revered Hindu festival, is celebrated across Sri Lanka, India, and other countries with significant Hindu populations. In 2025, the festival will fall on Monday, 20 October, with the main celebrations marking the triumph of light over darkness. Observed as a public holiday in Sri Lanka, the five-day festivities culminate in rituals steeped in devotion and cultural heritage.

Though the majority of Sri Lanka’s population is Buddhist, about 13 percent are Hindus, primarily of Tamil ethnicity. Tamils have been an integral part of the island’s society since ancient times, preserving their traditions while coexisting closely with the Sinhalese.

On Deepavali, Hindu temples conduct special ceremonies, devotees meditate, and families exchange gifts while wearing new clothes. Worship of Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth, is central to the celebrations. Visitors can immerse themselves in these traditions while enjoying comfort at places like Glenross Living, a well-known and preferred luxury hotel in Kalutara, combining cultural experiences with modern hospitality.
