Celebrating Diwali in Mauritius – 2024’s Festival of Lights

As Diwali approaches, Mauritius prepares to dazzle with vibrant lights and heartfelt celebrations on October 31, 2024, turning the island into a radiant tribute to the Festival of Lights. Homes, gardens, and buildings are beautifully adorned with clay lamps, candles, and electric lights, creating a vibrant atmosphere. Fireworks light up the night sky, symbolising the warding off of evil spirits.

While the festival is celebrated over five days, only one day is officially recognised as a public holiday. The essence of Diwali revolves around embracing light over darkness and the victory of good, with worship centred on Goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu, who is believed to have assumed human form to assist her husband in overcoming malevolent forces. Many Mauritius resorts will choose to celebrate this in some aspect, so visitors to places like the Anantara Iko Mauritius Resort & Villas should check accordingly if they wish to celebrate.
