Celebrating the Binara Full Moon Poya Day – A Religious Day with a Trace of Historical Poignance for Buddhists

Commemorated in the month of September, Binara Full Moon Poya Day is a significant day for Buddhists in Sri Lanka. It is also the day that Buddha allowed female Buddhist monks to join the order, hence the historical poignance.

Usually signified by a full moon, during Poya day Buddhist monks and Buddhists in the country indulge in meditation and other religious observances of their choice. These momentous Poya days are also recognized as national holidays and most businesses and public places remain closed. Whilst visiting pilgrimage sites like Tangalle is a common practice among Buddhists on this day, you can easily combine your pilgrimage with a stay at a luxurious Tangalle resort the likes of Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle resort, nestled within easy reach of Sri Lanka’s popular monasteries and other natural and cultural gems.
