According to surveys and statistics by the Laotian government, the China-Laos railway significantly increased employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for residents, as well as tourism, trade both domestic and foreign, and finally investment. It also cut commutes between the two countries – what used to be a 4-day trip from Northern to Southern Laos, but now with the railway, it takes less than half a day.
The railway also cut transportation costs between the two countries by up to 40%. Officials from the opening of the railway stated that the opening of the railway itself changed the way people travelled in Northern Laos, promoting exchanges of trade, culture, and wealth. The railway itself began construction in 2016 and commenced operation in 2021, and the tourism boosts will affect those in town for a luxury Mekong River cruise, or even those looking for a property to stay in such as the Mekong Kingdoms.
