China’s Domestic Tourism Receives a Boost

Promising Signs of Recovery

With the easing of lockdowns and inter-provincial group travel restrictions, the domestic tourism market in China has seen an encouraging boost. According to Fitch Ratings, since Shanghai’s lockdown came to an end in May, there has been an uptick in holiday bookings; this, in turn, is a sign that tourism spending will be increasing in the second half of the year. Interestingly, there has been a decline in group travel, while healthcare-related tours, family holidays and research trips have become more popular.

This rise in domestic travel was also seen during the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday from 10th to 12th September 2022; according to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, over 73 million domestic tourist visits were recorded with a revenue of USD 4.14 billion being generated. Such domestic travellers have much to choose from when it comes to attractions to visit like Xian’s Terracotta Army and the ancient City Wall adjacent to accommodation providers like Grand Park Xian. Those based at such city centre hotels in Xian can also enjoy safe stays with health and hygiene protocols being strictly followed.
