China has officially become the largest international source of tourists to the Maldives, marking a notable shift in the archipelago’s traditional visitor mix. Between January and June 2026, the Maldives welcomed 163,638 visitors from China, representing 15.7% of all international arrivals.
The rise comes as the Maldives’ core tourism strategy continues to centre on high-end luxury, with Maldives beach resorts and overwater villas remaining the destination’s calling card, even as the modern traveller increasingly seeks more than scenery. Overwater pavilion dining, private yacht charters, wellness retreats, and marine conservation experiences at resorts like Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu Resort are all seeing rising demand from this new wave of visitors, alongside growing interest from Russia.
The shift underscores how Asia-Pacific wealth is reshaping Maldivian tourism demand, with Chinese travellers increasingly favouring experiential luxury over traditional package holidays – a trend resorts across the archipelago are moving quickly to accommodate.
