Celebrating Kandy’s Living Heritage
The Kandy Esala Perahera 2026 brought centuries-old traditions to the streets of Kandy from 18 to 28 August. The festival opened with five nights of Kumbal Perahera before moving into the Randoli Perahera from 23 to 27 August.
The highlight was the Grand Randoli Procession on 27 August, featuring Kandyan dancers, drummers, fire dancers, and elaborately decorated elephants. The procession honoured the Sacred Tooth Relic housed at the Temple of the Tooth, along with four devale processions. The festival concluded with the Diya Kepeema ceremony and a daytime procession on 28 August.
As visitors increasingly seek experiences rooted in local traditions, hotels such as Kings Pavilion Kandy offer convenient accommodation along with complimentary offering opportunities to explore the heritage sites in Kandy, sightseeing alongside the festival.
