Esela Perahera

Commemoration of Kandy Esala Perahera – A bright and colourful occassion

Known to be one of the oldest religious practises and a grand display of culture, the Kandy Esala Perahera takes place in the month of August. This year, the perahera will commence on the 8th of August and will carry on till the 11th. Visitors from all parts of Sri Lanka and even foreign tourists flock to watch the parade take place.

The rituals begin at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic where the main elephant adorned in rhinestone attire worships the tooth relic and it is then placed on the elephant’s back to be taken on a procession. Following this elephant are colourful dancers, other elephants in beautiful attire, stilt walkers and even people performing dangerous tricks with fire. The best places to stay in Sri Lanka for those who plan on visiting for the event include hotels like Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts.
