The constant bad news about the environment comes as no surprise, as of late. Around the world, coral reefs are dying, with the most famous Great Barrier Reef on a rapid decline in the last few years. Tioman is one of the top tourist destinations in Malaysia, with any hotel in Palau, Tioman such as Berjaya Tioman Resort and houses several coral habitats.
The good news is that the corals in Tioman are overcoming the damage! In fact, in 2013 Tioman’s hard coral cover was at 52%, and a recent 2017 survey showed the hard-coral cover increased to almost 60%. This information was gathered after monitoring 89 sites in the Malaysian Peninsular and 138 sites in east Malaysia.
