Deepavali Festival

Deepavali Festival in Sri Lanka This Month – Celebrating the Festival of Lights

Known as the Festival of Lights, Deepavali is annually observed by Hindus across the world including those in Sri Lanka. This annual cultural event which falls on the 24th of October this year commemorates light triumphing over darkness and good overcoming evil; its origins are linked to the tale of Lord Rama victoriously returning home after defeating King Ravana. Also honoured during this festival is the Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity.

Many traditions and rituals can be observed at Hindu temples during this time which travellers to the country can observe as well. One of the key Hindu sacred sites is the Koneswaram Temple in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka; holiday tours can be enjoyed at this destination which can be easily reached by Cinnamon Air, a leading domestic air taxi service. Many customs can also be seen in Hindu households during Deepavali like the lighting of oil lamps, decorating houses, sharing meals with family and friends, exchanging gifts and making traditional sweetmeats.
