Deepavali in Sri Lanka

Deepavali in Sri Lanka This October – Celebrating the Festival of Lights

An annual festival observed by Hindus across the world including in Sri Lanka, Deepavali falls on the 24th of October this year. Dubbed the Festival of Lights, this day is linked with several stories from Hindu folklore; one is of Lord Krishna defeating Narakasura, while the other tells of how Lord Rama returned with Sita Devi after triumphing over the demon king, Ravana. Thus, Deepavali celebrates good overcoming evil as well as light overcoming darkness.

Deepavali is a public holiday and during this time, those staying at luxury hotels in Sri Lanka have the chance to see some of the festivities; this includes properties of hospitality brands like Amaya Resorts & Spas in key locations on the island. Amongst the customs followed are the lighting of lamps and fireworks, buying new clothes and enjoying sweetmeats with family and friends. The goddess of wealth and prosperity, Goddess Lakshmi, is also paid homage to on this day.
