Dhofar Enjoys Winter Tourism Boost – More Tourists Expected in the Months to Come

Dhofar, a southern governorate of Oman, has witnessed a significant surge in tourism this winter season, according to the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism. Visitor arrivals exceeded 35,000 between October and February helping to record an increase of 18.4% compared to the previous season. A notable portion of this influx came from European countries via charter flights, highlighting Dhofar’s growing appeal as a unique winter escape. Additionally, hotels, particularly luxury establishments, enjoyed exceptional occupancy rates which were over 95% during the season.

The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism is committed to sustaining this momentum as well. Initiatives include enhancing existing tourist attractions, such as Jebel Samhan’s Haywar Cave. Furthermore, restoration efforts at Sadah Fort and Rakhyut Fort are expected to culminate in their reopening on World Heritage Day, 18th April, providing visitors with a deeper appreciation of the region’s historical significance.

Additionally, plans are underway to designate spaces within Al Baleed Archaeological Park for small and medium-sized enterprises, alongside Riyada card holders, to showcase and sell antiques, local handicrafts, and souvenirs. This archaeological park and the adjoining Museum of the Land of Frankincense next to Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara continue to be key attractions in the region. For those based at a Salalah resort, Oman adventures provide plenty to discover throughout the year including during the upcoming khareef season from June to September.
