Diwali – The Festival of Lights Celebrating the dawn of a brighter era

Celebrated by Hindus’ all around the world, Diwali is perhaps the most colourful of events in Sri Lanka. The term ‘Diwali’ means festival of lights implying the transition from darkness to light. Diwali is decided according to the Lunar Calendar. The Festival though celebrated together by millions of Indian and Sri Lankan Hindus signify different religious events, for instance the Hindus’ Daemon Narakasura by goddess Satyabhama and for the Jains it signifies the attainment of Nirvana by Mahavira. This time, Diwali falls on the 11th of November and will as customary be celebrated for three days. The highest concentration of Hindus can be found in Jaffna and interior areas of the country like Hatton and Nuwara Eliya. Those of you who are eager to witness the festival of lights may always find good holiday bungalows.
