The Sri Lankan parliament has decided that the land belonging to the Sri Lanka Ports Authority near the famous Rumassala forest, is to be converted into an eco-tourism spot. The decision was passed by members of parliament in an effort to preserve the fragile eco-system. The area, which faces the Galle harbour, is the location of several well known-hotels, like the Closenberg Hotel, and through sustainable eco-tourism, the government hopes to see more Eco-friendly hotel in Galle. The Rumassala forest is home to several indigenous plants and animals that are found nowhere else in the country and the Ports and Shipping Ministry Secretary has been ordered to carry out a feasibility survey with special mention to the environmental. A committee comprising of several environment and wildlife representatives, along with the Galle Heritage Foundation, will be appointed shortly.
