Enhancing Tourist Experiences in Kyoto with Technology – Hotels Also Using Digital Innovations
As Japan sees a steady increase in arrivals following the easing of border restrictions last October, destinations like Kyoto are incorporating technology with tradition to elevate visitor experiences, helping to ensure a safe environment too. This was brought into the spotlight with the unveiling of a next-generation art project known as “Naked Garden One Kyoto”; it ran from 15th September to 25th December 2022 and gave people a chance to enjoy both real-world and virtual exploration of the city. As part of the initiative, more than 20 landmarks featured stunning digital art which made them a popular draw at night, which also helped to reduce visitor numbers during the daytime. Some of these attractions had virtual versions too which will no doubt help to attract more travellers to the city.

A prime example of the Naked Garden One Kyoto project was Nijo-jo, a historical castle and UNESCO World Heritage Site in the city which is around an 8-minute walk from Park Hotel Kyoto; it was transformed at night through digital art that included the projection of a phoenix onto one of its gates (Kara-mon). The castle was also recreated in a virtual world so people could enjoy its digital art around the world through their smartphones.

It should be noted that accommodation providers are also utilising new technologies and coming up with initiatives to ensure guests have safe stays too. A prime example can be seen in the above-mentioned luxury hotel in Kyoto which apart from adopting stringent hygiene and health protocols has implemented an online check-in process which makes the arrival at the property smoother and easier. All guests need to do after they have made their online booking via the official website is to click on the “check-in link” that will be sent to their email address; they will then have to register their personal data. Once the required information has been registered, guests will see a display of their registration card to be used when they arrive at the hotel.
