An annual event that has cultural significance, while also offering spectators a chance to enjoy lively festivities, the Bentota Perahera took place again this December in the popular seaside resort town of Bentota. Also referred to as the Sri Maha Kashapa Daladha Perahara, this parade can be witnessed near the Galapatha Raja Maha Viharaya (temple) and those planning to watch such events can look to stay at a resort Bentota has to offer within easy reach of the temple such as AVANI Bentota Resort & Spa. One of the striking elements of this event is the use of elephants that are colourfully decorated and taken in procession as part of the parade which also features a sacred relic. Adding to the colour of the procession are traditional dancers as well as performers including fire eaters, jugglers, drummers, stilt walkers and whip-crackers.
