Perahera

Esala Perahera held in July – An age-old religious parade

This is one of the oldest and grandest events that take place in the historic capital of Sri Lanka. The Kandy Esala Perahera takes place over about 10 days with dates that are set according to the astrological calendar. The parade starts at the Temple of the Tooth Relic with the main elephant clothed in majestic robes carrying the tooth relic out of the temple premises.

The Esala Perahera is a procession that takes place to pay homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha enthroned in the Dalada Maligawa. It is quite a long parade that begins at around 7 pm and goes on till midnight or even longer. Local and foreign tourists lodged at Mandaramnuwara hotels flock to the streets to witness this amazing display of religious culture. Tea & Experience Factory and other hotels may offer special packages for guests during this period.
