To cater to the rapid influx of tourists visiting the country, the Airports of Thailand have proposed a new plan to revamp and expand the Chiang Mai International Airport. The meeting was held with the advisory team of the expansion project along with the representatives of government agencies, state enterprises, local community and the private sector. Having noted that Chiang Mai is a crucial and significant gateway to the north of Thailand, which usually attracts 80% of tourists from the world, it has been predicted that a whopping 6.8 million passengers will pass through the Chiang Mai Airport this year. With most guests flying in the country choosing to stay at many luxury hotels in Chiang Mai, the expected number of tourists is set to increase to 13.2 million passengers by 2034. Therefore, hotels and resorts such as Anantara Chiang Mai Resort , located within the city limits, are bound to get quite busy over the coming years.
It has been projected that by 2034, the airport will be able to support 34 flights an hour and 20 million passengers a year.
