Recently, the final Randoli Perahera was held in the historic hill capital of Kandy. The perahera is a type of procession, which in this case is centred around the sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha. In Sri Lanka, sightseeing options abound in Kandy, though this cultural festival is one of the most popular with travel specialists the likes of Tangerine Tours offering special tours during this time.
Part of the larger Esala Perahera, the Randoli Perahera took place on five days beginning on 10th August and concluding on 14th August. One of the significant elements of this perahera is that the Sacred Tooth Relic casket is paraded through the streets on the back of a majestic tusker elephant. The final Randoli Perahera is considered the most spectacular parade and features colourful pageantry and a number of traditional performances.
