HCMC to Boost Tourist Spending by Emulating Singapore, South Korea’s Duty-Free Model – Experts Advocate Expansion of Duty-Free Shops
Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) is advised to increase its tourism revenue by emulating the duty-free shopping models of Singapore and South Korea, according to experts. Dr Hyejin Park from RMIT University in HCMC highlights the significant impact of shopping on foreign exchange earnings. By diversifying shopping options, HCMC can attract more international tourists and boost spending. In 2019, shopping tourism contributed $178.2 billion globally, underscoring its potential for economic growth.
To attract high-spending tourists, HCMC should expand its international brand offerings and establish duty-free shops in busy areas and airport terminals, similar to Singapore and South Korea. These countries have successfully created shopping paradises with extensive duty-free stores. For instance, serviced suites in Singapore the likes of Pan Pacific Serviced Suites Beach Road Singapore enhance the shopping experience by offering convenient accommodations. By following these models, HCMC can enhance its appeal to tourists and significantly increase tourism revenues.
