Nuwara Eliya is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Sri Lanka and offers spectacular landscapes and weather conditions that are always chilly and comfortable. While these are two reasons that most people visit this locale, many travellers from India and those of Hindu faith arrive for different reasons.
According to the mythical epic, Ramayana, Ravana kidnapped Sita, the consort of Lord Rama, an incarnation of Vishnu, and kept her here within the beautiful garden known as Ashok Vatika. Many believe that this garden is the site of the current Hakgala Botanical Garden in Nuwara Eliya, situated close to many hotels and Nuwara Eliya bungalows. Those who find accommodation in the region with options including Mas Villa can plan a day outing to this garden. There are also two Hindhu kovils situated here dedicated to Sita and Hanuman respectively, which are frequented by Hindu visitors.
