Hong Kong, Macau: QR Codes and Biometrics Used For Faster Cross-Border Travel

Hong Kong and Macau have introduced a new system enabling permanent residents to use QR codes and biometrics for cross-border travel, eliminating physical documentation and enhancing efficiency. Starting July 19, travelers can utilize fingerprint and facial recognition technologies. Benson Kwok, Hong Kong’s Director of Immigration, reported that 2.5 million Hong Kong residents have registered for Macau’s self-service channels.

Ng Wai Han, Macau’s Director of the Public Administration and Civil Service Bureau, stated that 300,000 Macau residents registered for Hong Kong’s e-channel services can update their accounts via the Macau One Account app to generate QR codes for border crossings. The app’s ‘My border crossing’ section now includes digital identification, simplifying identity verification. Future plans may extend the system to non-permanent residents who may arrive from Macau to stay at a hotel suite in Hong Kong at properties such as Hong Kong Hotels Wan Chai. Registrations can be completed at self-service machines, with ID cards or QR codes usable for e-channel services within three hours.
