Indian Tourists Dominate Arrivals in Sri Lanka

Fostering Bilateral Goodwill

Indian tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka in the month of September were three times the number of the next highest source; this was according to a statement made by Taranjit Singh Sandhu, the Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka, as reported in a recent online article published by a local newspaper, The Island. The Indian High Commissioner made these comments as he participated as chief guest at the first-ever Research Congress of the Post Graduate Institute of Sciences at the University of Peradeniya.

During his address at this prestigious university within easy reach of Kings Pavilion, he also mentioned the solidarity visit to Sri Lanka this June by Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi; this, in turn, led to a rise in tourist numbers from India. Having the option of staying at resorts along the coast or Kandy luxury hotels, these arrivals contributed to boosting the tourism industry which suffered a huge loss after the Easter terrorist attacks. The Indian High Commissioner also stressed the scientific traditions of both nations and highlighted that opportunities were available for cooperation in the Science and Technology sector.
