Innovative Crab Project to Utilise Barren Paddy Lands – A Note-Worthy Initiative

A novel project is set to be implemented in Sri Lanka whereby barren paddy fields will be utilised to farm crabs. A collaboration between the Ministry of Fisheries and the National Aquaculture Development Authority, this project will make use of around 50 acres of paddy land; the land has been left unused because of the mixing of sea water.

This eco-friendly project near Rekawa Lagoon is expected to boost tourism which is likely to benefit Tangalle hotels in the area including the likes of Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort. Costing approximately Rs. 165 million, the project will take place in three stages and is expected to provide new job opportunities as well as a form of livelihood for 300 local youths. It is hoped that this crab farming concept will also be followed in other parts of the country.
