Japan Mulls Restarting Domestic Travel Subsidies – Getting the Industry Back on Track

As reported by Reuters in November last year, the government of Japan is considering restarting an initiative that would promote domestic tourism through travel subsidies. This move will provide a much-needed boost to the travel and hospitality sectors with hotels and airlines amongst those that will benefit. Such an initiative was initially halted due to rising COVID-19 cases, but now conditions are such that the government is looking to resume it.

As part of the incentive package, there is expected to be larger discounts for those travelling on weekdays compared to weekends. This will, in turn, encourage more domestic tourism as citizens look to explore and experience their home country at culturally and naturally rich cities such as Kyoto.
