Japan Plans to Offer Vaccination Certificates – Smartphone App to Be Developed

As mentioned in June this year, the Japanese government is planning to issue those travelling abroad this summer with COVID-19 vaccination certificates. Initially, the certificate given to those who have received the completed dose of a COVID-19 vaccination will be in paper form; however, this is expected to be subsequently replaced with a smartphone app like the newly launched Digital Covid Certificate used by the European Union.

With the app, it will be easier to visit destinations that have reopened borders; travellers can scan QR codes when entering a nation or before boarding flights for the relevant information to be updated including vaccine verification and results of antigen and PCR tests. As vaccination drives take place in the country and worldwide too, Japan will be hoping to soon reopen its borders for international travellers; it already has strict protocols in place including at Otaru hotel options in Hokkaido such as Grand Park Otaru that have adopted enhanced health and hygiene measures.
