Japan to Develop Electronic Travel Authorisation System – Streamlining Entry for Visa-Exempt Visitors

Japan has announced plans to introduce an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) requirement for visa-exempt travellers. This system, similar to the ESTA used in the United States, will streamline the entry process for foreign visitors while bolstering security measures. The ETA programme will apply to citizens of countries currently exempt from obtaining short-stay visas for tourism, family visits, and business trips. These visitors will be required to submit an online application before their trip to Japan, providing details such as their name, purpose of visit, date of birth, and accommodation address.

The ETA system is scheduled for launch by 2030, coinciding with the government’s target of welcoming 60 million visitors annually. Japan remains committed to its reputation as a welcoming destination for international travellers and the government plans to further exempt additional countries from short-term visa requirements. This will pave the way to attract more travellers who can look forward to exploring destinations like Otaru while staying at hotels in Hokkaido. These include properties such as Grand Park Otaru which provide captivating insights into the nation’s rich history, culture, and natural beauty.
