Japan’s Tourism Surges: Remarkable Recovery to 78% of Pre-Pandemic Levels

Japan is experiencing a significant resurgence in its tourism industry, marking a remarkable recovery to nearly 78% of pre-pandemic levels. For two consecutive months in July, the country welcomed over 2 million foreign visitors, according to Japan’s National Tourism Organization.

Official data for July 2023, post-pandemic, reveals that Japan recorded 2.3 million visitors, compared to 2.99 million in July 2019, a remarkable rebound considering the challenges posed by the pandemic. Outlays by visitors during the same period also recovered to 95.1% of the figures recorded in 2019.

With China recently lifting its ban on tour groups to Japan, inbound spending is expected to continue as a crucial factor supporting the Japanese economy in the coming months. Notably, the number of U.S. and Australian visitors has already exceeded 2019 levels. In July, Japan welcomed 313,300 Chinese visitors, reflecting a 70% improvement compared to four years ago.

This is a favourable period for properties across Japan, including hotels near Kansai Airport, such as the preferred Travelodge Honmachi Osaka.
