Hoping to elevate its status to match more developed beach holiday hotspots in the island Kalutara town is set to undergo a major facelift to boost tourism and transform into the beach Mecca to a thriving resort town. In spite of the presence of Kalutara Beach hotels the likes of AVANI Kalutara Resort and others the urban amenities and recreational potential of the area still remains untapped as declared by the local government. The development plans are the brainchild of the Ministries of Urban Development and Tourism and Sports which also intends to construct tourism related facilities and other leisure amenities for the use of tourists and local pilgrims alike. Calido Beach, one of the area’s most popular beach hubs is also part of the new development project according to the government which has allocated an area of 20 hectares for the proposed facilities with the aid of the Urban Development Authority.
