Kandy Esala Perahera in Sri Lanka – A Spectacular Spectacle

The Kandy Esala Perahera is one of the most anticipated Buddhist festivals in Sri Lanka which has deeper connections with religion and local traditions. “Esala” is also considered to mark the start of the monsoon season, thus the purpose of the procession being, to obtain blessings of rain from the Gods for the cultivation of crops. The grand procession is considered to be part of one of the oldest and most majestic Buddhist festivals in Sri Lanka and features performances of traditional dancers, fireball acrobats, whip crackers and decorated elephants. The festival is held annually in July and August on a date appointed by the Temple of the Tooth Relic or Sri Dalada Maligawa. The largest “tusker” (elephant) carries the Sacred Tooth Relic, while the rest of the procession including colourful and traditional performers, parade through the streets of Kandy.
