Local residents in Sigiriya have launched a project named the “Village Experience” targeting tourists visiting the area. The historical city of Sigiriya features an ancient rock fortress built by the former Sri Lankan monarch, King Kashyapa. As part of the experience, tourists are taken on a traditional bullock cart, on a journey of 2 kilometres through the jungle to the scenic “Egoda Wewa”, a river overlooking the rock fortress. The journey is followed by a boat ride across the river to the “Egoda Wewa” village located relatively close to some of the best hotels in Sigiriya. Guests are treated to renowned Sri Lankan hospitality and a sumptuous lunch of authentic local cuisine at the village. Those based at accommodation options in the region such as Sigiriya Jungles can enjoy this unique experience on their getaway. A highly popular programme among foreign tourists visiting Sri Lanka, this project has become an economic boon for the local economy.
