Considered to be one of the grandest and oldest Buddhist festivals in Sri Lanka, the Esala Perehara is held annually in the city of Kandy during the month of August. The procession features many performances such as traditional dancers, acrobats, fire breathers along with a cortege of majestic elephants and tuskers.
The parade which will take to the streets from the 16th to the 26th of August 2018 is held to venerate and honour the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Lord Buddha and the four guardian gods to beseech them for blessings to reap a bountiful harvest. Those interested in visiting the city during this time to watch the event can easily find bungalows in Kandy for accommodation such as Dream Lodge.
