The highlight of Sri Lanka’s cultural events, Kandy Esala Perahera came to an end on 7th August 2017 after 10 days of parades across the prestigious city of Kandy. With traditional dancing, rhythmic drumming and astonishing acrobatics encircling the spectacularly dressed parade of elephants, this ancient procession attracts Buddhist devotees and curious tourists alike. Those on vacation in Sri Lanka were able to take flights to Kandy from popular domestic air carriers such as Cinnamon Air and witness this amazing spectacle.

Set amidst thousands of enthusiastic spectators, the procession consisted of three segments: the Kumbal Perahera, Randoli Perahera and Maha Randoli, which concluded the procession on the tenth day. Although the Kandy Esala Perahera primarily honours Lord Buddha, the procession also pays tributes to four deities namely, Vishnu, Natha, Pattini and Kataragama. A prominent annual religious event in Sri Lanka, the perahera was followed by a final ritual of “water cutting” the following the last day.
