Kandy Esala Perahera to be Held in Sri Lanka – Witness A Key Cultural Festival

The Kandy Esala Perahera is an upcoming annual event which will take place on the island of Sri Lanka. This enchanting cultural and religious festival is held for ten days in July or August; it honours the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha as well as the Vishnu, Kataragama and Natha Gods and the Goddess Pattini. During this time, devotees of different religions will offer prayers for stability and blessings for the nation too. The festival is also known to feature colourful processions with elephants; however, with the recent passing away of the magnificent Maligawa Tusker, Nadungamuwa Raja, it’s yet to be seen which elephant will carry the Sacred Tooth Relic at this year’s Perahera.

Despite the ongoing economic crisis, Sri Lanka is open to tourists who can safely enjoy the many places to visit in Kandy including the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, the focal point of the Esala Perahera; those planning to head here in the upcoming months can check specialist travel websites like Kandy Escapes to gain more insights into what awaits. Keep in mind that the official dates for the Perahera this year are yet to be confirmed so travellers should check ahead before they visit.
