Kataragama Maha Perahera 2020 – A sacred cultural extravaganza

Sri Lanka is popular for many vibrant processions (peraheras), and Kataragama Maha Perahera hosted by the Kataragama Dewalaya is indeed one of the main ones. It’s a procession that’s equally important to Buddhists, Hindus, and Islamic communities in Sri Lanka, and amidst the chaos of COVID-19, the pandemic, the officials say that they will still conduct the procession following all due rituals.

The procession will be followed by traditions such as flag hoisting (21st July) and fire walking (31st July).
