A vibrant festival procession that travels through the streets of the holy city of Southern Sri Lanka, the Kataragama Perahera is held in honour of the god Skanda. Kataragama Perahera is held in the months of July and August during the full moon. It features fire-walkers, fire-eaters, singers, musicians playing traditional instruments and performers showcasing a range of acrobatics; all this pageantry is centred around elephants dressed in clothing with ornate designs, lights and flowers.
A religiously and historically important spectacle, this procession runs for about two weeks. Those planning for their Sri Lanka holidays can include the Kataragama Perahera in their itinerary with the help of travel operators such as Jetwing Travels. The perahera is a must see event attended by thousands of locals and foreigners alike.
