Speaking with the Weekend Today, Dr. Tony Blakely, one of Australia’s leading epidemiologists gave his opinion on when he thought the nation may reopen its international borders. This was highlighted on the Nine News website on 7th March 2021 which quoted Dr. Blakely; he believed that when around 40% of the local population was vaccinated against COVID-19, Australia could permit borders to reopen for travellers from low-risk countries.
He went on to state that once vaccination levels reached approximately 60% to 70% there was a chance to relax border restrictions further; however, Dr. Blakely further added that such conditions are also dependant on how effective the vaccine proves to be. Despite the lack of foreign arrivals, the country has been promoting domestic tourism; from centrally located hotels Southbank has to offer in Melbourne such as WRAP on Southbank to apartments in Adelaide and Sydney, there’s a wide range of safe accommodation options for Australians to choose from.
